His death was announced today by his family, who said: "Sven-Goran Eriksson has passed away. After a long illness, SGE died this morning at home surrounded by his family."
After retiring from football at the age of 27, Eriksson began his coaching career with Degerfors in 1977, before joining Swedish club Gothenburg, where he won the Swedish league title, two national titles and UEFA Cup 1982.
He continued to coach in Portugal, in the Benfica team and coached Italian teams such as Roma, Fiorentina, Sampdoria and Lazio. There he won seven trophies including the Italian Serie A, two Italian Cups and the European Cup.
Eriksson stepped down as manager of Lazio in January 2001 to replace England manager Kevin Keegan.
He started in the 2002 World Cup qualifiers in Japan and South Korea, including a 5–1 win over Germany in Munich.
The Three Lions beat Argentina 1-0 in the group stage but lost 2-1 to Brazil in the quarter-finals. Two years later, in Euro 2004, the British national team made it to the quarterfinals after losing to Portugal.
In January 2006, after qualifying for the summer World Cup, it was announced that Eriksson would have to leave after the World Cup in Germany despite having two years left on his contract.
The England national team once again reached the quarter-finals but were again defeated by Portugal on penalties. He was immediately dismissed.
After the England national team, Eriksson coached Manchester City to ninth place in the Premier League in 2007-08. He moved on to the Second Division in 2009–10 and coached Notts County before moving on to Leicester City in 2010–11. He moved to China to coach Guangzhou R&F, Shanghai SIPG and Shenzhen between 2013 and 2017.
On the international stage, Eriksson coached Mexico, Ivory Coast, and Philippines in 2018-2019. Eriksson coached 12 clubs, including Manchester City, Leicester, Roma and Lazio, winning 18 trophies.
