Last week, Nigerian singer Tems announced on her social media platforms that she would no longer perform in Rwanda at the concert scheduled for March 22, 2025, at BK Arena.
After Tems shared this message, her fans reacted strongly, expressing mixed feelings. Shortly after, Tom Close also shared his thoughts, stating, *“Let’s put an end to the disrespect [.......].”* His comment quickly gained traction, with many people supporting him and vowing to stand by him, which led to Tems facing online backlash.
However, on February 4, 2025, Tom Close called for understanding towards Tems, asking people to give her a break, explaining that she might not have enough information about Rwanda.
Through his X (formerly Twitter) account, he wrote “The artist Tems didn’t have sufficient information. Although she chose to cancel the concert for reasons we may not agree with, she had planned to perform.”
He added “Let’s ease the pressure on her. Next time, when she has all the facts, she will come and perform for us. Rwanda is open to everyone, and those causing issues are just misinforming her.”
Tom Close’s apology comes after a wave of harsh criticism against Tems on social media. Meanwhile, reports suggest that Tom Close is organizing an event to counter the perceived disrespect from foreign artists. Many continue to show him support, including Rwanda’s Minister of Youth and Arts Development, Utumatwishima Jean Nepo Abdallah.
