According to a new lawsuit obtained by TMZ, these individuals say they won a $10.3 million judgment against him in 2023, but R. Kelly has only paid them a small portion of that amount.
The plaintiffs, including Lizette Martinez, Lisa Van Allen, Kelly Rogers, Faith Rogers, Roderick Gartrell, and Gem Pratts state that they have received less than $500 and are demanding that R. Kelly pay the remaining $9.9 million.
These victims appeared in Surviving R. Kelly a Lifetime documentary, and they are now suing both the singer and Universal Music, the label that represented him. They claim that R. Kelly blocked the screening of the documentary in 2018, which exposed his wrongdoings.
TMZ reports that the judgment was issued in August 2023 but R. Kelly attempted to challenge it, arguing that he was unaware of the case and should not be held accountable.
R. Kelly is currently serving a 30-year prison sentence, and there are concerns among the victims that they may never receive the full compensation. They acknowledge having received some money, but it is far from what they were awarded.
R. Kelly’s current lawyer Jennifer Bonjean told TMZ that the judgment was issued before she joined his legal team and that his appeal is still in progress.
R. Kelly aged 58 was sentenced in 2022 to 30 years in prison after being convicted on nine counts including child sexual abuse and sex trafficking of women and girls.
